Asagaho:朝顔(あさがほ):Bellflower

2009/08/30(Sun) updated.

"Asagaho:あさがほ" in Manyoshu is not the same flower as Japanese morning glory many Japanese people know. It is unspecified. It seems that Manyo-people called the flower blooms in the morning "Asagaho:あさがほ".
It is thought to be the one of the following flowers.

Chinese bellflower

"Kikyou:桔梗(ききょう)" in Japanese. It blooms bell shaped. It is native to East Asia.

Rose of Sharon(Hibiscus syriacus)

"Mukuge:槿(むくげ)" in Japanese.

Bindweed

"Hirugawo:昼顔(ひるがお)" in Japanese. It looks like a mourning glory and wilts in the evening.
